As the U.S. military restores North Field on Tinian, once the launch site for the atomic bomb missions of World War II, AET is playing a critical role in ensuring the success and durability of the project.
Located in the Northern Mariana Islands, and originally built during WWII, North Field became the largest airbase of the war, housing over 40,000 personnel. It is being revitalized to support future operations in the Indo-Pacific. The restoration is part of the Air Force’s Agile Combat Employment (ACE) strategy, which enhances operational flexibility and resilience across the Pacific.
AET’s contributions include:
- Testing multiple aggregate sources to identify optimal materials for the proposed asphalt mix design.
- Establishing a mobile laboratory on-island, which earned a USACE Certificate of Laboratory Validation.
- Providing hot mix asphalt mix design and quality control testing, ensuring the infrastructure meets rigorous performance standards.
AET is working with Tigerbrain Engineering to provide technical support to the Fluor team for the United States Air Force, further strengthening the collaborative effort behind this strategic initiative.
With over 20 million square feet of runways, taxiways, and aprons being rehabilitated, AET ’s expertise is helping restore North Field’s operational capacity for both routine and contingency missions. Their work supports not only military readiness but also local infrastructure, benefiting residents and ranchers who rely on these routes daily.
As North Field returns to strategic prominence, AET’s technical leadership is helping pave the way, literally and figuratively, for the next chapter in U.S. Pacific defense.
